The key focus of the 2006 festival is to provide skills to young people, by exposing them to a rare opportunity to work with arts-based professionals. A void exists in Tasmania with regard to skilled street performers and it is our aim to address this by providing engaging and informative workshops with highly trained practicing artists. Laura Purcell and Tim Denton, both street performers with a rich history of experience will visit schools with a workshop that will give an overview of the craft (March 6 – 17). From that point, any students interested can enrol in the ongoing workshops where they will be trained and assisted in devising their own street show (March 18 – 21, 25 – 28). Participants will have the chance to train in one or more of the street show disciplines including statue, stilt-walking, mask and clowning. Throughout the week of the festival these shows will entertain in prominent areas around the CBD and during the Treasure Hunt workshop program. The shows will hold a prime position in events and be a premiered at the Harajuku inspired Street Party. It is hoped this program will lead to future employment for participants in some of Tasmania’s many festivals.
