White Box

The White Box comes alive during Streets Alive.

Come and treat your sense's to three awesome afternoons of performances. From Jazz to hip-hop; experimental dance to live comedians. Various collaboration of local and interstate artists. Anything could happen, any it surely will...

The White Box is an interactive performance space : part living Installation, part experimental performance.

Full program available here the week before the event, if you're lucky! otherwise just rock up.
Oh, and the best thing...It's all Absolutely FREE!

Wednesday 25 August:
Mihirangi (QLD) - 4:00pm
A one-woman show captivating an international audience Mihirangi's Maori roots and progressive techniques are portrayed by a unique vocal style and dynamic range that creates a band-sound live all with her voice looping-n-layering beat-boxing, bass-lines, harmonies, and riffs. From pursuing Japanese whaling fleets as a Sea Shepherd crewmember to performing to LA's highest-profile activists (including Dixie Chicks, Chilli Peppers, Pierce Brosnan, Martin Sheen), Mihirangi is a refreshing and revolutionary artist at the forefront of contemporary musical culture. www.myspace.com/kulchanation

Max McHenry (NT) - 5:30pm
Direct from Alice Springs. Max McHenry brings his bag of tricks, his alter ego Ev ‘The Rev’ Bevan and some really great tunes to The White Box.

Friday 27 August:
The Birdmann (VIC) - 4:00pm
A man like no man, The Vanguard of Vaudeville delivers fantastic facts and acts - wowing audiences in The Tiny Top, The Famous Spiegel Tent, the international burlesque scene and from the Melbourne Comedy Festival to the Edinburgh Fringe. The Birdmann is now a vaudeville humourist of uncommon exception combining traditional and modern forms to develop a genre of his very own on a tour fantastic. www.myspace.com/thebirdmann

Afrikan Warriors (Tas) – 5:00pm
The Afrikan Warriors were inspired by acrobats performing in the streets of Dar-es-Salaam and were determined to learn the art of acrobatics and they succeed in it. Now they have bases' in Australia, United Kindgom and Tanzania.

Pete McGeachy and Jack Storay – 5:30pm
Those two singer-songwriters will collaborate with songs of misery and joy.
Watch-out somebody stole his engine…

Saturday 28 August:
MC - The plantagenous Cheryl Wheatley
Direct from the Bass Strait Islands. Cheryl has worked as a puppeteer and tutor with Terrapin Puppet Theatre and actor/theatre maker with is theatre ltd in White Trash Medium Rare (2002) and Instant Famous (2003). In 2007 she debut her one woman show Queen of the Snakepit at Ten Days on the Island Festival which had a sell out season.

Billy Whims (Tas) – 1:00pm
Billy Whims songs glow in the dark, with all the mystery of overgrown backyards.
In 2009/2010, Billy toured Japan, the North-West and North-East of the USA and Canada.
…at times reminiscent of a female Whitely. Other highlights include Zombies!, drum samples filling me with nostalgia for a Casio keyboard I had as a kid…" ALEX BUCHANAN - RAVE magazine

Invisible Boy – 2:00pm
Invisible boy is Townsend and Ben McKinnon at the hub of an ever-evolving lineup, the sound of which has been likened to Simon and Garfunkel, The Lucksmiths, Angus and Julia Stone, Damien Rice and Things of Stone and Wood.

Paint Your Golden Face – 3pm
An independent two-piece band based in Hobart, Tasmania. Jonathon and Jordan formed Paint Your Golden Face in July 2008. They have toured extensively, playing successful shows in Launceston, Melbourne, Sydney and overseas.

The Stoics – 4pm
The Stoics have independently recorded and released three Ep’s in the three years they have been together. They have supported some of the best bands around across a myriad of genres; The Cat Empire, The New Pornographers (Canada) , Yves Klien Blue, Cloud Control, Ash Grunwald, Cut Copy, Clare Bowditch etc.... The five-piece band is currently based in Tasmania, their debut album is set for release early 2011. www.myspace.com/stoics

Indigenous Hip hop project – 4:30pm
Streets Alive is proud to announce an exciting new partnership with YouthBeyondblue which will enable the return of the Indigenous Hip Hop Project (IHHP) team to Tasmania.
