Street Party
Harajuku Street Party
Expressing the Spirit of Individuality
Venue: Brisbane St Mall
Date: Fri 31 March, 8-10:30pm
Cost: Free!
The week of festivities will be launched in Launceston with a vibrant and visually amazing parade of costumes created and worn by young people. Inspired by the Harajuku district of Tokyo, young people assemble to celebrate their fantastical imaginings in what is a meeting of carnival, punk, horror, cutey-pie and cartoon characters and anything the mind stretches to. We will create a world of beautiful chaos that incorporates the magic of a circus freak show, the excitement of a rock gig, the drama of theatre and the pageantry of the mardi-gras all rolled into one. Puppet makers, choreographers, costume designers, hair and make up artists will assist the students by sharing their creative knowledge to make outlandish parade creations. The procession will wind its way around Launceston’s central business district and be set against multi-media images representing the rich diversity of our local culture and subcultures.
Ideally a school will work together to create the final outcome.
