Raising The Curtain
An in-depth look into Launceston's alcohol and other drug scene
Venue: The Annexe Theatre, Academy of Arts, Inveresk

The forum will provide a creative opportunity for approximately 100 young people aged 14-30 to explore their thoughts and opinions on the drug and alcohol culture in Launceston. The Forum will be run in the format of the SBS show Insight, with the addition of a panel of around 4-5 key "experts" from around Australia for information and comments in regards to the discussions raised. Paul Dillon from the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre has been secured to be one of these.
Attendees will be from Grades 9 and 10 high school students, senior secondary students, TAFE and University Students and other young people in the community up to the age of 30. The participants will be drawn from a cross section of ages and experiences to provide lively and diverse conversations.
The aim of the forum is to: Find out what young people are thinking; Get young people thinking and talking about the drug and alcohol issues; Explore strategies on how to stay safe.
The following themes will be explored: The alcohol culture in Launceston; The drug culture in Launceston; Similarities and differences between these cultures; Exploring if media information is perceived as useful or propaganda; Suggested strategies from the floor for remaining safe in these cultures.
Getting Involved
Each high school in the north of the state is invited to send 5 student delegates from grades 9 and 10, preferably those studying Health and Wellbeing, to the forum and each college is invited to send between 10 and 20 delegates. Schools with high school and college can bring 5 from high and 5 senior secondary. The forum will also be attended by student reps from the University of Tasmania and TAFE Tasmania. It is hoped that the students will be versed in, or have an interest in, health, sociology or related fields and be a confident public speaker.
