Bodyscapes, an exciting new dance work being premiered for International Day of Disability Thursday 1st at the Annex Theatre at 8pm, will explore personal journeys and stories, social image and relationships.
‘There is a natural affinity between disability and the arts. Being creative is not limited by ability, it is only limited by the boundaries we place on ourselves. Dancers with disabilities present a set of boundaries which in turn can inspire and break through conventional thinking and ideas. One of the strengths of this work has been the full integration of people with a disability working alongside highly trained young dancers. This full integration has allowed all the dancers to discover that below the surface of each individual there is a humanity which is shared.’
James Newton, Dancer.
‘It has to be emphasised that the aim of this work was not to create a ‘disability dance piece’, but rather to create a dance work which has trust, discovery and joy at its heart. It is about integrity and equality. It is about changing the vocabulary of movement and using contemporary dance to engage and investigate each dancers’ individuality and their unique ableness regardless of their age or disability.’
Jay Watson, Choreographer
